Many animals fortunate enough to have owners are provided shelter from the frigid temperatures outdoors, which have dropped so low recently. Those animals which are homeless may find a caring resident in the community who will take them in or set food out. Others find shelter from the brutal temperatures wherever they can. Winters icy grip may last for several more weeks, but the community has reached out with warmth and compassion to help care for some furry & feathered friends.

A caring family in our community offered homeless animals shelter and food, but the task of caring for so many animals can be an overwhelming responsibility. Although the Morgan County Humane Society faces this fact each day, they offered their assistance.

In Martinsville, Indiana, The Morgan County Humane Society faced a critical situation, but not alone. Residents in the community came out to offer their help and financial support when the shelter took in 68 dogs and 23 cats. People brought food, blankets, while other residents offered to be foster homes for the animals until their adoptions could be arranged. Area Veterinarians also provided examinations for the animals, some of which needed medical attention. During this time the Morgan County Humane Society also arranged shelter for 10 birds, 1 horse, 2 miniature horses, and 3 ponies. Each year the local shelter cares for hundreds of dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens until they're adopted.

The staff makes arrangements for animals to receive medical attention, including spaying and neutering to prevent overpopulation in our community. They also feed, groom, and keep the kennels and cages clean, among other daily chores. Caring for so many animals is a constant challenge for the staff. Those in the community who have volunteered their time and donations to assist the shelter are greatly appreciated. With all the animals taken in daily though more help is still needed.

Volunteers and donations are a vital part of The Humane Society shelters across the country. Without this assistance from the communities the shelters would cease to exist. The shelters are always in need of volunteers to help the staff clean the kennels, cages, and portable crates. Assist with feeding the animals, general care of the facilities, and help those who are considering adopting pets. The staff arrives an hour before the shelter opens and would appreciate any help you can offer.

The Humane Society shelters in many areas also need foster homes to care for animals until they are adopted, and quality pet food. They are also in constant need of financial donations to pay for veterinary services, such as examinations, and spaying and neutering and medical supplies like antibiotics.

Anyone who would like to make a financial donation, volunteer their time should contact their local shelter.
